Illa Jones known has Billy to the government. But to all his fans he's know has Illa Jones he brings something fresh to the music something that hasn't been done before he speaks of personal life experiences most people can relate to and I a chance to interview him
AF: Illa Jones is such a unique alias. How did you come up with it?
Illa Jones:Well I wanted something that gave me a first and last name. I used to be just "Ill Jones," but for marketing reasons I added the 'a' at the end. The Illa represents my personality and the integrity of my music. Where I'm from, if you're ill, it means you have talent as a musician wether you're a lyricist or a producer. (And) with me being transplanted from home, my name always reminds me who I am and what I represent. As far as Jones, well, I feel like that last name is well respected. Therefore, Illa Jones.
AF: We've noticed that some of you're songs have touched very controversial topics especially for a teenager your age. For example, songs like "16" where you literally describe a suicidal phase you went through during your junior year in high school. Some people, including some of your own family members, have opposed you releasing those songs because of what it could've done to your image. How do you respond to that?
Illa Jones: I'm really glad you ask that. I always make sure to keep it real with my fans. There's thousands of kids out there who have gone though the same thing I did. Wether it was a situation at home or a situation like mine where I felt neglected by people who I trusted in, this song was 120% sincere. I would rather go down as a speaker who always kept it one hundred, than to lie to the world on wax to create the illusion that I'm ok.
AF:Wow that's real. With that being said, should we expect sequels to "16" or "Crazy Exboyfriend?"
Illa Jones: (Laughs) I hope not! I just want to make music that makes people feel good inside. Thats what I'm about. But don't get me wrong, events in life inspired me to write those songs, so I won't be suprised if they come up every once in a while .
AF: Illa there has been speculation, through the internet, within the last couple of weeks about the relationship between you and artist Jovonni. I think what everyone wants to know is, what's the current relationship between you and Jovonni?
Illa Jones: Well, before I answer that , let me just say Jovonni is a hard worker. I know from being around him that he is all about progressing and being successful, even at the cost of people he is close to. However to be honest, me and Jovonni are doing our own thing right now. He obviously has his own priorities and I have mine. I'm happy for his success already as an artist. He's still my brother-from-another- mother and I support him all the way, just as I know he fully supports me. No beef!
AF: This year you have had the opportunity to work with DMV sensations Tony Allure and iLIM. How has working with them changed you're own music?
Illa Jones: Yo big shout outs to the kid Tony and ILIM. Homieesss!!! (Laughs) I think they are the biggest reason why my music has changed so much in the past year. I feel like ever since I was working with them I started having fun with music again and not going to music when I only needed an outlet from the negatives of life. Tony and I recorded a cover to Ash Roth's 'I Love College' and made 'I'll Miss High School.' From that moment on I realized that I need to have fun again with music. I sat back in the studio and watched them record their mixtape while enjoying performing with them and its been a highlight for my career.
AF: Any closing statements?
Illa Jones: Live from New York, its the Jones show starring...Nah I'm just playing (laughs) The Jones Show is set to premiere on July 28th at approximately 9:00 PM. It will be hosted by the world-renowned DJ Green Lantern and DJ Smallz. I want to give a great big shout out to the Homies, Jovonni in your area, Shellz and everyone who has helped me in getting it done. Be yourself and say what you feel, because people who mind don't matter and people who matter don't mind. Jones!
